The English Department offers a wide variety of electives for BHS students. Read the descriptions below to learn more about these exciting courses:
1.) Film Literature: This course is about the 
creative and symbolic art form that is cinema. Students will familiarize themselves with both the artistic and technical elements of filmmaking and draw parallels between cinematic technique and literary devices. This course will promote a more thoughtful understanding of cinema as an increasingly integral part of our culture.
2.) Creative Writing: This course will 
allow students to experiment with all forms of writing: short fiction, creative prose, poetry, memoir, horror, drama, myth, humor, essay, etc. This course encourages students to embrace their creativity and voice.
3.) Public Speaking: In this course, students will 
learn the characteristics/elements of great speeches, how to craft and write them, and practice and deliver them. Students will write a variety of different speeches for different purposes and audiences. The course will develop students' poise, confidence, and speaking habits. Upon successful completion of the course, students may receive college credit.
4.) Journalism: In this course, students learn 
the skills of reporting, editing, interviewing, and evaluating sources. Students will write in a variety of styles including news, features, reviews, editorials and sports-themed articles. Final written pieces will published in The Wildcat Word, the BHS online student newspaper.
5.) Fundamentals of Theater: This course is 
recommended for students with an interest in drama and its performance. Students will learn about the various styles of theater and the roles of the key players: actors, directors, choreographers, designers, etc. Basic acting skills will be developed through improvisation, monologues, and scene study.
